the fall






the fall is beautiful

but the fall will hurt you with its beauty

& its acting - especially the main character / actress catinca untaru

in order to get the shots needed, catinca needed to react in real-time to events

lee pace [other main actor] was put in a wheelchair in order for catinca to truly believe that roy / lee could not walk

later she finds out that he CAN walk, but that’s not the point

the point is that SHE fleshes out the story between her REAL encounters with lee pace; like everything is a coloring book & she fills out all the colors with her imagination

& lee pace, like the champion of an actor that he is [who will be the Elvenking in The Hobbit now omg so excite], is able to adapt seamlessly

like not many people can just improv on the spot to cater to catinca’s every thought; not many can say that they can do such a thing

& then there are the fantasy scenes - the visual porn that really make the movie one of my favorites

every scene is shot as is by the director - as in no cgi; tarsem compiled a collection of his favorite places & shot different scenes of the movie there

& the fantasy scenes are so well done because it’s all so surreal but it’s still so entirely human & relateable

the costumes are fabulous

& what’s especially fabulous is how all of the characters bleed into real life & how the "real life" characters bleed into the fantasy world, until it's hard to differentiate the 2

until it's hard for catinca to

even for roy, too

& then the heartbreak comes

because the movie ISN'T about that fantasy

it’s about that harsh reality in the hospital

& the harsh truth is harsh

because fantasies can be an illusion, not just for a child, but for an adult who seems to have given up on all life

he's woven this fantasy world for her... to bribe her into getting the things he wants [don't worry there's no pedophilia]

roy isn't a perfect person & there are “no happy endings” with him

& the acting is so painfully beautiful with lee & catinca on the bed, with catinca literally begging roy - begging lee pace - to live; begging him to stop killing all of the characters in the story – basically to stop killing himself & giving up

but somehow she reaches him & somehow he promises to hold onto life again

& somehow he becomes catinca's champion again

because she loves him

because they make a wonderful & odd little pair together

you need to watch it for the entire experience

the script

the various characters [especially the ones in the "fantasy" world that are so interesting]

the cinematography

the locations

the music [which feature's beethoven's 7th symphony all throughout]

& lee pace's hair & forearms when he becomes the masked bandit [if you’re in to like “masculine” cis male forms & the like]

also the costumes, all of the costumes - especially for lady evelyn

also charles darwin's coat

his coat is flawless

this movie is not flawless, but it is certainly limitless in the reasons why you should watch it

re: VIDEO-GAMING / LP SERIES - This did not age well

I forgot this blog existed. My life is so utterly different now. I used to maintain this blog as a middle schooler, then for a variety of arts classes two colleges ago (you can imagine the cringe I deleted at that time to save face). It was an outlet to my fixations at the time, one of them being the rise of Let's Player content and Gaming Personalities on YouTube.  I was a fan of many content creators. Unfortunately, almost all of them have been subject to extreme scrutiny and various cancellation attempts - for a variety of Valid reasons. I will get into this, don't worry. I have since deleted and/or privated posts singing the praises of these content creators. I don't make those decisions lightly. And in my mind, there's a difference between being embarrassed at the "cringe" nature of my "takes" a decade ago, and wanting to remove any content that praises people who have since been outed as groomers, predators, abusers, racists, and even fascist...
